Local water group recommends guidelines for new state authority

A Valley water authority has set forth guidelines to define a new proposed state water authority.

In his State of the State speech in January, Gov. Doug Ducey has committed to spending $1 billion to secure the state’s water future as reservoir levels from Colorado River water continue to shrink. Arizona shares Colorado River Basin water with six other states and Mexico.

Initial plans in the legislature were to create a new Arizona Water Authority, but now disagreements are arising over how it should be created. A majority in the state senate, for example, do not want a new government body but think the mission can be incorporated within an existing agency, such as the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona.
