No team from the home town ended up winning a Section 7 bracket at the annual high school boys basketball extravaganza for schools across the western United States in State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
But Deer Valley and Ironwood made their presence felt.
Three months after it made history as the first Arizona squad to miss the 32-team Open Division field but make a state final in 4A-6A, the Skyhawks made history again. This was the first year Section 7 set up qualifying brackets for more than 100 local schools, and Deer Valley was the only team to win a qualifying bracket then reach a bracket final in the main tournament.
