Local, state officials call for school board members who ‘tested’ Maryvale High security to resign

The Arizona state schools superintendent and two Phoenix City Council members are calling for the resignation of two Cartwright Elementary School District Board members who allegedly tried to smuggle a boxcutter onto Maryvale High School’s campus to test the school’s security days after a deadly stabbing on the campus.

In a Wednesday statement, the Phoenix Union High School District said on Monday, Aug. 25, Lydia Hernandez and another woman who did not identify herself at the time but is believed to be Hernandez’s daughter Cassandra Hernandez, attempted to bring the unauthorized weapon on to the campus. This came eight days after a 16-year-old student Michael Montoya II, was fatally stabbed on campus by another 16-year-old student.

Both Lydia and Cassandra Hernandez are members of the Cartwright Elementary School District and Lydia Hernandez is a member of the Arizona House of Representatives.
