Sun City West resident Susan Finlay published her ninth novel, "Breadcrumbs and Bombs, A Tangled Roots Historical Mystery," on Jan. 8.
Ms. Finlay was born in Germany to an American father and a German mother, but grew up in the U.S. She has lived all over the U.S., is a mother of two grown children, one of whom now resides in Germany.
"Breadcrumbs and Bombs" is a novel about genealogy, World War II, and the Ethnic/Sudeten Germans who were living in an especially dangerous place during the war. The story is set in four places: Sacramento, California, in current times, where a young American man is tracing his family’s roots; the former Sudetenland during WWII; Prague, Czechovslovia also during WWII; and Bavaria, Germany, during and after the war. With all those settings, the author needed multiple point-of-view characters, and needed to create those characters’ worlds.

The research for this book was comprehensive, Ms. Finlay said, "but also very sad and horrifying."
"What learned is especially interesting because mother’s family was among the millions of Ethnic Germans who were expelled from the Sudetenland and relocated to Germany," she stated in a news release. "They had never lived in Germany before, and remember aunt telling that the Czechoslovakians didn’t want them and the Germans didn’t want them. It’s hard to think about their suffering, but hope book will help tell the story that many have kept quiet about for too long."
Ms. Finlay has a degree in business and is a retired bank auditor, an avid photographer, and a world traveler who loves research, history, and anything related to books. She also writes a blog called "Susan Finlay Writes Mysteries and Suspense."
She is on Facebook and Twitter and is an active member of the SCW Writers Group that meets monthly at the R.H. Johnson Library, 13801 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West. Her first six books are available in the library, and all nine of her books are available in print format or Kindle format on Amazon.com.
