Southwest Valley city officially recognizes two new holidays

City staff will now have off New Year's Eve, Juneteenth

Litchfield Park City Council approved an agenda item Wednesday to make New Year’s Eve and Juneteenth official city holidays.

Prior to the adoption, Litchfield Park recognized 11 city holidays, compared with other Valley cities that recognize an average of 13 holidays.

Juneteenth is a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the U.S., and originated in Galveston, Texas, when 2,000 Union troops marched into Confederate-held Galveston Bay and announced that the 250,000 currently enslaved Black people in the state were free.
