Light rail extension into West Valley requires detour around State Capitol

Legislature banned construction near Capitol; Phoenix earmarks $2.5M for planning process

Valley transit leaders have to go back to the drawing board to determine how to bring light rail to the West Valley after the state legislature forbade construction near the Arizona State Capitol.

Last month, Gov. Katie Hobbs signed into law a bill that will ask voters to extend the state’s half-cent transportation sales tax beyond 2025 when it was set to expire.

If approved by voters next year, Proposition 400 would help to fund the expansion of light rail into the West Valley, along with many other transportation projects around the region. However, the bill also included language prohibiting the construction of the capitol extension light rail line adjacent to the State Capitol’s legislative and executive buildings as previously approved.
