Library update comes at a high cost in Sun City West

Facility built in 1979

Forty-four years ago, the R.H. Johnson Library was built and has been a highlight in Sun City West.

Now the community is looking at a revamp for the facility that has been used by tens of thousands of residents to find a good book, to get online, to have a meeting and more. But the price for such a move could run between $4.5 million and $6.5 million.

The Recreation Centers of Sun City West brought in Phoenix-based Durkin Architects LLC to offer up plans for a redesigned facility. Consultant Cindy Louie, presenting the potential plans, said when the company is assisting libraries in renovations, the idea typically is to draw inside more patrons. However, she said Sun City West residents are using the library with impressive numbers and adding space could only make it more attractive.
