Liberty Elementary board may push summer school to cover testing deficiencies

Fifth-grade math results at crux of decision

Liberty Elementary School District may consider summer school for current fifth-grade students after data shows low math proficiency scores, supposedly caused by the impacts of COVID-19 and remote learning.

According to Ericka Daniel, an education services officer for the district, the reason why fifth-graders struggle over other grades is developmental.

"We see a significant decrease in performance in our fifth-graders," she said to Liberty's school board on March 13. "What do we know about our current fifth-graders and students, [is] these students missed foundational instruction in second and third grade due to the pandemic."
