Seeking to avert a looming $3 million budget deficit, the Liberty Elementary School District governing board has called a special election for Tuesday, Nov. 3, asking voters to continue a 10% maintenance and operations budget override.
The school board said this decision sets up a test of community trust for a district recovering from a tumultuous period that included the costly ousting of past leadership.
If approved, the override is estimated to generate about $3.5 million in its first year. District officials said the measure is a continuation of an existing property tax, meaning it will maintain the current secondary tax rate of roughly 63 cents per $100 of net assessed property valuation rather than introducing a new tax.
