In a recent newspaper article a writer rightly calls for the removal of a road sign in Arizona with the word “squaw” in it.
Squaw Peak Road should be renamed Piestewa Peak Road just, as long ago, Squaw Peak was renamed Piestewa Peak.
Of course the term squaw is considered a contemptuous term for a North American woman, especially a wife.
I worry about women not only being labelled with a contemptuous term, but I also worry about women being treated with contempt.
Nowhere is this more evident, in my view, than in the way some Muslim women are treated in our world. We have heard, of course, of Muslim women not being allowed to drive; of having to wear head to toe coverings; and of not being allowed to work outside the home.
But for some Muslim women it gets much worse. In the teachings of Islam and under Sharia Law, Muslim women:
• Must “submit” to their husbands at any time.
• Must not express a dissenting opinion about their husband taking other wives.
• Must have male witnesses to prove rape.
• Can be beaten into submission.
• When testifying in Sharia court, their testimony counts half that of a Muslim male’s testimony.
Unfortunately this horrible list goes on.
The really tragic thing about all this is that the majority of Muslim Americans wish we had all this same crap here — Rich Andrews, Sun City
