Letter to the editor: Bill ignores end-of-life choices

Posted

Senate Bill 1439 by Nancy Barto ignors your end-of-life choices.
The bill removes liability for health care workers if, as a matter of conscience, they refuse to follow written instructions by patients regarding end-of life choices.
This law, signed by Gov. Ducey, does not deprive you of your rights as a patient.
Either you or your representative (Healthcare Power of Attorney) can question health care personnel regarding refusal to assist in end-of-life decisions, and can request replacement of these personnel from your case with personnel who will honor Advanced Directives.
The Arizona Attorney General’s office has an excellent free Life care planning packet available at AZAG.gov.
Included are blank forms as follows:
• Durable Health Care Power of Attorney;
• Durable Mental Health Care Power of Attorney;
• Living Will (End of Life Care) — your specific instructions;
• Letter to My Agent (Representative);
• Pre-Hospital Medical Directive (Do Not Resuscitate) (must be printed on ORANGE paper).
