Let’s put ICE detention center rhetoric on ice

OPINION — Response to Scott Mitzner’s letter, Surprise, Arizona: a glimpse of hell: I suspect there is a big difference between a state prison and a federal detention center.

As advertised, the future Department of Homeland Security ICE detention center in Surprise is meant to be a 500- to 1,500-bed facility, acting as a short-term, three- to seven-day processing center for migrants —not a maximum nor minimum security prison.

DHS, and other agencies, are having to do things quickly to handle the overwhelming numbers of people who crossed the border, especially those who commit crimes.
