Legions looking for veterans

New law allows more membership

Like most nonprofit organizations, the American Legion took some hard hits during 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic.

Legion posts throughout the country, including those in the Northwest Valley, did get some good news this year. A new federal law changed the eligibility requirements for Legion membership, opening the door for more military veterans to join.

Prior to this year, only those veterans who served during periods of actual combat were eligible Legionaires. But a law signed July 30 by President Donald Trump now allows any honorably discharged veteran who served since Dec. 7, 1941 to join the American Legion and access its programs and benefits. The Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service LEGION Act already has made a difference for Northwest Valley Legion posts.
