Peoria resident's detainment highlights need for better immigration policy, Valley leaders say

Celebrations were had when Peoria resident Kelly Yu stepped out of an immigration detention facility in Eloy a week ago after having spent the better part of a year facing deportation at any moment.

Yu does not have legal status, but she is a wife to a legal citizen and a mother with no criminal record, as well as a successful business owner who employs dozens of employees. She fled China as a refugee more than 20 years ago while pregnant with her daughter.

She was detained last May while complying with a routine immigration check-in, and since has garnered a following of support from those who feel merits of her situation outweigh the requirements of the President Donald Trump’s immigration policy.
