Lawmakers differ over controversial Arizona Starter Homes Act

A Phoenix lawmaker says a housing bill that claims to make starter homes more affordable is needed because municipalities aren’t doing enough to solve the current housing shortage.

Arizona State Sen. Analise Ortiz, D-Phoenix, voted for Senate Bill 1229, a measure supporters say is expected to offer more affordable housing to residents.

Ortiz is a Maryvale resident who cosponsored the bill. The lawmaker is a renter and said she cannot afford to buy a single-family home in the current housing market.
