Last-second layup sends Deer Valley boys to 4A basketball final

Skyhawks' rivalry with Peoria takes center stage

GILBERT - The first team that just missed the initial boys basketball Open Division bracket just became the first non-Open Division team to reach a conference final anyway.

To do so, Deer Valley had to go the length of the court in less than five seconds to knock off the defending 4A champions on their home floor.  The Skyhawks did so at full speed.

With 4.7 seconds left and Mesquite leading 66-65, Wildcats junior guard Jaylen Wollangk missed his second free throw. Deer Valley senior guard Eric Perkins grabbed the rebound and immediately dribbled to the three-point line and dished to junior guard Travis Vasquez for the winning layup as time expired.
