Kyrene receives certificate for financial excellence

Posted

Kyrene School District has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 27th straight year.

The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, according to a district release. Receiving this award year after year represents a significant accomplishment by the Kyrene finance team, the district and its leaders.

“Kyrene is once again recognized as a leader in Arizona school finance,” said Kyrene Superintendent Laura Toenjes in the release. “Sound financial management is an immense point of pride in Kyrene School District and I am grateful to our Finance team for their continued dedication, attention to detail and exemplary financial practices.”

Kyrene received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement in recognition of its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2022. An impartial panel judged the Kyrene report and found that the district met the high standards of the GFOA program.

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was established by GFOA in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments with comprehensive annual financial reports in the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.

“The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting,” stated Michele Mark Levine, GFOA director of technical services, in the release. “Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

The Kyrene finance team is led by Associate Superintendent Chris Herrmann and Finance Director Brian Lockery.

Kyrene’s finance department is responsible for accounting, purchasing, payroll, financial reporting, budget control, food services, National School Breakfast and Lunch program, Medicaid, property control and auditing functions for the district.
