Kvaran: We need real solutions for problems facing America
Kimball Shinkoskey’s recent letter (“Today, even the homeowner is homeless,” Daily Independent, March 22, 2022) certainly does point out a plethora of problems facing America today; but I keep feeling that we don’t need more of that, we need the presenting of more solutions.
The writer states that, “We admit we do not know Black history, but we refuse to admit that we do not know White history either.” So, what is being done by our leaders to remedy this situation? Well, “Lawmakers in nearly half of the states (it’s now more than that) have proposed legislation to limit the teaching of concepts such as racial equity and White privilege” and “deem teaching of historical racism and its impact on modern U.S. society divisive or racist.”

When our “left wing-right wing” focus group discussed schools banning the teaching of material “that cause students to feel ‘discomfort’” (quote from a proposed law) was brought up, the two most educated and most involved with the educational system both remarked, “Well, there goes math.”
Forbes, in an article discussing new proposed laws runs through 39 states, begins like this. Alabama has put out an “administrative rule” “prohibiting public K-12 schools from offering instruction that “indoctrinates” students in certain social or political ideologies.” There goes our U.S. Government and Civics classes.
Alaska would ban any “use of the 1619 Project.” And so it goes. America has a big problem and not talking about it is not going to solve it.
The right wing of the political spectrum is often on the record as saying that what is keeping racism alive in America today is talking about it. Homelessness, drug usage and mental health are other big problems facing us.
