Kvaran: Says all deserve good health care

Posted

I was somewhat disappointed to read Erick Hernandez’s recent letter (“Decries calls for universal health care,” Daily Independent, Aug. 20, 2020), in which he seems to argue against universal health care in the name of unions.

I am a union supporter of long standing, having been a member and a shop steward in two unions (UAW, IWW) over the decades.

Unions now represent about 10% of American workers and have been on a steady, continuing decline since the Reagan years.

To deny health care coverage universal health care would provide to the other 90% of the workers, not to mention their families, because one happens to have a good plan themselves goes against every principle of union and worker solidarity.

What America needs to do is to fix the government, so that it works for the people and not just for the top 10%.
