Kraken trade one-time top prospect Shane Wright to the Predators for Matthew Wood

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Kraken are moving on from one-time top prospect Shane Wright a little over four years since taking him with the fourth pick in the 2022 draft.

They traded Wright to the Nashville Predators on Sunday for fellow young forward Matthew Wood.

“We are excited to add Shane to our mix of forwards,” Predators general manager Chris MacFarland said. “We feel he will bring a strong, two-way game to our team and will add to the pace of our lineup. We believe Shane will continue to grow as a player, and we look forward to working with him.”

Wright, who looked to be the prospective No. 1 pick but slipped to Seattle, has four points in 14 games after putting up 27 last season and a career-best 44 in 2024-25. The 22-year-old gets a fresh start in a deal for Wood, who is a little over a year younger at age 21 and was the 15th pick in the 2023 draft.

Wood has three points through 14 games after scoring 17 goals last season.

“Matthew is a young forward who adds size and an elite shot to our group,” Kraken GM Jason Botterill said. “He’s a skilled player, with high hockey sense, who demonstrated his offensive potential last season as a rookie in the National Hockey League. We’re thrilled to welcome Matthew to Seattle and excited to see his impact on our team. We thank Shane for his contributions to our organization and the city of Seattle, and we wish him all the best in Nashville.”
