Korte: Scottsdale schools' District Additional Assistance override benefits everyone

This fall, Scottsdale voters have the opportunity to enhance the Scottsdale Unified School District’s financial stability for the next seven years.

The District Additional Assistance budget override generates funds necessary to pay for capital needs that cannot be met within SUSD’s operating budget, including:

  •  Technology – laptops and software licenses
  •  Curriculum – STEAM resources, science kits, assessment software
  •  Fixtures, furniture and equipment – desks, chairs and cabinets
  •  Fine arts – musical instruments, lighting, choral risers, lighting, sound equipment
  •  Playground/facilities – playground equipment, shade structures and outdoor learning centers
  •  Library – reading materials, tables and innovation rooms
  •  Athletics – equipment, uniforms and scoring equipment

The DAA increase is directly related to the higher costs of supplies and materials. Your yes vote will lessen the impact of inflation on these essential student services. Scottsdale schools will not only continue to be a source of community pride, but also a reliable pipeline for our future.

As a longtime business owner, two-term member of City Council and long-time supporter of SUSD and prior budget overrides and capital bonds, I observed firsthand how everyone benefits from good schools.

National studies show that property values go up as much as 15% in communities with a reputation of supporting their schools. While the benefits of education on children are obvious, solid public schools attract more than families.

They attract good employers, who can pay competitive salaries. A quality education benefits Scottsdale’s economy.

To continue to move our city forward and grow our economy, the DAA needs your yes vote — starting on Oct. 13 with your mail-in ballot, or on Election Day Nov. 8.
