Kindergartner with autism assaulted at Mesa school

Mother questions whether incident could have been prevented

A mother is not happy with how Mesa Unified School District officials handled the report that her 5-year-old son, who has autism, was assaulted in a school bathroom by another child, and believes the incident could have been prevented.

“The principal took two hours to notify me and Mesa PD. My son had red marks; it was not notated in any report even when my son told the officer that day. The principal did not have my son checked out by the school nurse,” the mother — whose name is being withheld so as to not identify the victim — said via email.

The mother said she believes the school’s buddy system requirement for two kindergarten students going to the restroom together should be stopped.
