Kalchik: Pro-life groups do support women who choose birth over abortion
In response to Kim Wayman’s letter alleging that pro-life people do not support women who choose birth over abortion:
As a member of the Knights of Columbus, I know that is false. The Knights have a program called ASAP (Aid and Support After Pregnancy) that’s provided over $10 million to pregnancy resource centers and maternity homes to help moms and babies in need.
When the Knights Council at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Sun City learned that the Sisters of Life, which supports women through pregnancy and birth, needed car seats so new moms could safely transport their babies, the Knights sponsored a “Car Seats for Christ” weekend at St. Elizabeth Seton. The fundraiser provided over $10,000 in cash, new car seats and other items to support women who choose birth over abortion.

Pro-life supporters like Catholic Charities and other Christian agencies provide adoption services. However, that service is not without its challenges. In 2022, the state of Michigan (my home state) tried to bar funds from Catholic child placement agencies because those agencies would not place children with same-sex couples.
A basic belief of the Catholic Church is that marriage is a union between a man and a woman and placing children with same-sex couples would be a violation of that belief.
After a lengthy court battle, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services agreed that the action against Catholic Charities was a First Amendment violation. It was the pro-abortion government of Michigan that had no concern for the babies who were being aided by the adoption services provided by the pro-life Catholic Charities to support women who chose life over abortion.
