Judge orders county to return $39K seized from man at Phoenix airport in 2020

It’s been nearly two and a half years since the start of the legal battle for $39,500 seized from small business owner Jerry Johnson at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

This week, a Maricopa County judges has ordered the return of cash confiscated from Johnson.

He was never charged with a crime, but the state attempted to take his savings through civil forfeiture. After a trial court judge ruled Johnson did not have standing to contest the forfeiture of his money in a decision that was appealed.
