A large brush fire prompted evacuations in Wickenburg on Monday afternoon.
Just after 1 p.m., Maricopa County advised residents to leave Wickenburg in the area from U.S. 93 to Zabel Mine Rd. and east and west of U.S. 60.
Traffic was backed up for at least 2 miles as fire crews battled the Jones Fire. U.S. 60 was closed at milepost 111, according to the county.
Large plumes of black smoke were seen near the Jones Ford dealership on the highway along Cemetery Wash. At least four planes were making passes over the scene dropping fire retardant onto the blaze.
Fire officials said the fire is burning in the Hassayampa River bottom in cottonwood, salt cedar along with grass and brush.
Just before 4 p.m., officials estimated about 100 acres had been burned. There was no word on whether any homes were threatened by the fire.
At around 5 p.m., it was reported several structures had taken damage. APS also shut off power east of U.S. 60.
Later Monday, the American Red Cross opened a shelter at Wickenburg High School to assist those in need.
This is a developing story. Watch for updates as they become available.
