Italian banter

Joe Arpaio invites ‘Sammy The Bull’ Gravano for a sit down in Fountain Hills

A cop and a gangster discover shared ground

It’s not every day a former county sheriff and underboss in the Gambino crime family sit down to discuss their shared Italian heritage over cannoli and coffee, but when they do, one can bet the conversation is equal parts ribbing, nostalgia and stories that end with “but you didn’t hear it from me.”

Marking their second visit, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio invited Salvatore “Sammy The Bull” Gravano to his office in Fountain Hills to talk prison steak, Italian slurs, a shared hatred of “the media” and who really killed John F. Kennedy (spoiler: It was the CIA, says Gravano).

Film director Clive Christopher led the discussion, but there was little moderating needed as the two first-generation Italian Americans spoke freely and at length about their past lives.
