‘Is this our new norm?’: City council members wonder if Phoenix PD is stuck 600 officers short of staffing goal

The Phoenix Police Department has been about 600 sworn officers short of its staffing goal of 3,125 for years.

Some Phoenix City Council members are wondering if that will change.

“Are we just recalibrating that this is the new normal?” asked Councilmember Jim Waring to Phoenix Police officials presenting the latest staffing numbers to the Phoenix Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee last week.
