Independent examines Peoria council spending by district

Members allowed to spend $30K annually

Peoria City Council members have an allotment of discretionary funds they are allowed to spend each year and each individual on the 7-member board spends them on a variety of things ranging from networking events to neighborhood improvements, according to a Peoria Independent public records request.

“Peoria’s council district fund policy is a reflection of a representative form of government, allowing mayor and council to directly meet the needs of the community we serve,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said in a statement. “We are exceptionally proud of the nonprofits and support organizations who assist our residents every day; and these funds enable us to impact their service to Peoria, while also supporting limited projects that impact the safety and quality of life of Peoria residents.”

Peoria allocates $30,000 to each council member annually, including the mayor, according to city policy.
