But what too few realize is inside fire departments across America is what is a life-changing event for most likely is just one of several emergency calls local heroes respond to during a given shift. It’s not just fires, of course, department experts tell us, but the day-to-day calls for service and pleas for help that run the gamut are taking their toll.
