In medically underserved areas, community health workers fill void

New ASU program seeks applicants to strength community health

In an effort to better meet and serve the needs of Valley residents, Arizona State University is looking to train about 80 people in a new community health workers program this year.

Community health workers are an invaluable asset to local neighborhoods as they often connect people in need with medical services. These workers typically will stem from the community they’re serving so they know the area, the people there and how best to serve their needs.

Those in the health care field say these community liaisons are doing more than meets the eye, as training people on how to use the health care system and using preventative care rather than only seeing a doctor in times of crisis is important.
