In an about-face, Peoria Unified school board votes down bond

Sandoval, Ewing change vote in 9th inning

In an about-face, the majority of the Peoria Unified School District governing board voted against putting a $250 million bond on the ballot for the 2023 general election.

Discussions and preliminary votes at recent school board meetings have been split over the bond, but the majority of the board has been in support of the measure, with board members David Sandoval, Melissa Ewing and Bill Sorensen voting yes, and Heather Rooks and Rebecca Hill dissenting.

However, the opinions of Sandoval and Ewing have shifted since then, and board members cast their final votes against the bond, 4-1, with the only approval coming from Sorensen, at the June 1 public meeting.
