Impending storm makes for risky Scottsdale mountain rescue

With a storm on the horizon, Scottsdale firefighters rescued a hiker Wednesday night from Tom’s Thumb in the McDowell Mountains.

The hiker, who was in his 20’s, was rescued using a helicopter from the Phoenix Fire Department, officials said.

“The rescue was tenuous considering the hour and the impending storm,” a department release stated.

The hiker was evaluated and refused transportation, and fire crews made it safely  down the mountain, officials said.

“Scottsdale Fire implores trail users to use good judgment not only for their safety but also the safety of those who are called to respond if they choose a trail/hike beyond their ability,” authorities stated in the release.
