Impact of limited spring training felt on businesses, city coffers

COVID-19 protocols in place at Mesa’s two stadiums, baseball exhibit

Limiting fans allowed at Cactus League games because COVID-19 concerns has put the brakes on an annual spring training baseball increase in customers to businesses and sales taxes to the municipality’s coffers, Mesa city and chamber officials said.

Mesa is home to two spring training venues:

  • Chicago Cubs games Feb. 27-March 30 were approved for 5,000 attendees including participants, coaches, spectators, event staff, officials and vendors at Sloan Park, 2330 W. Rio Salado Parkway. The stadium can hold 15,000 fans.
  • Oakland Athletics games Feb. 27-March 30 were approved for 2,500 attendees, with 2,000 seats for the fans via pod layout in either two or four seats. Hohokam Stadium, 1235 N Center St., has 10,500 seats.
