Illegal fireworks use could soon earn jail time in Phoenix

Phoenix plans to tighten restrictions, ban use near preserves and some parks

Phoenix is tightening restrictions on fireworks in the city.

An update to city code, which will go to city council for approval on May 20, will restrict fireworks use near city parks and preserves, make fireworks violators responsible for the cost of emergency recovery and disposal of fireworks and allow repeat offenders to face up to six months in jail.

Phoenix Assistant Fire Chief Justin Alexander told the Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee that the code amendment was the maximum enforcement the city could have under state law.
