ICE facility to draw big crowd to Surprise council meeting

LD29 Democrats to plead for action, while proponents cheer controversial project

The Surprise City Council has no say over a potential ICE detention facility on Dysart Road between Waddell and Cactus roads.

Because it is a federal project, it supersedes city code, meaning when the Department of Homeland Security purchased a vacant warehouse last week to detain those coming to the country illegally, the city cannot do anything about it, even if it wanted to.

But that won’t stop the council from hearing an earful from angry residents at Tuesday’s regular council meeting.
