Hunkapi CEO selected to provide trauma therapy in Kenya

Terra Schaad, founder and executive director of Scottsdale-based Hunkapi Programs, has announced she will be traveling to Kenya in September as part of the Missions of Hope International Medical Mission Trip 2022.

Schaad and 50 other physicians, dentists and first responders will provide much needed medical attention to more than 2,000 people in impoverished areas, according to a press release.

“It will be my first time offering trauma therapy across the ocean and within a different culture,” Schaad said. “I’m humbled and honored to have been chosen.”

Hunkapi CEO selected to provide trauma therapy in Kenya

Terra Schaad, founder and executive director of Scottsdale-based Hunkapi Programs, has announced she will be traveling to Kenya in September as part of the Missions of Hope International Medical Mission Trip 2022.

Schaad and 50 other physicians, dentists and first responders will provide much needed medical attention to more than 2,000 people in impoverished areas, according to a press release.

To further help Kenyans in need, Schaad and the team at Hunkapi are collecting donations of:

  •  Toothbrushes
  •  Socks
  •  Feminine hygiene products
  •  Underwear for women and children
  •  iPhone models six through nine
  •  Android phones of any model
  •  Monetary donations of $50 or more.

Items can be dropped off at 12051 N. 96th St. in Scottsdale. Monetary donations can be made at www.hunkapi.org/donate/#general-donations.

Schaad is a trained somatic experience practitioner, an alternative form of therapy. In somatic experience, she watches people’s body language and helps them notice what is happening in their own body. She studies everything from dilation of pupils to flushing of skin to changes in breathing and blinking patterns.

She combines her education, intuition and experience with horses to observe and interpret individual and group behavior and gives immediate, tangible feedback. She is committed in her purpose to give all beings the same opportunity with horses and to live life with a heart wide open, the press release stated.

Hunkapi provides a variety of services including therapeutic riding, counseling, emotional regulation, team building, addiction recovery and more. Clients who participate in Hunkapi’s programs include those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, emotional disorder, addiction disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
