Hungry Arizona food banks get $3M boost

County leaders allocate CARES Act funding for stressed nonprofits

County leaders last week found more funding to help Arizonans struggling to feed their families through the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.

The Maricopa Board of Supervisors voted unanimously at its Sept. 19 formal meeting to adjust the funding allocation provided through the CARES Act — the $2.2 trillion federal relief package passed in March — to bolster a variety of programs, including nearly $3 million in new funding for food banks.

Bruce Liggett, director of the Maricopa County Human Services Department, said the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn took an immediate toll on food banks across the state.
