Hundreds rally for Goodyear firefighter battling cancer and an insurance company

Hundreds of firefighters from around the nation rallied in Phoenix to support Goodyear firefighter Gilbert Aguirre Wednesday for his upcoming legal battle against CooperPoint Insurance, a workers’ compensation insurance provider for cities and fire districts.

Aguirre was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2015. Union reps and Aguirre claim the cancer is work-related, most likely from the carcinogens he’s been exposed to over the years during his service.

Despite the hazards Aguirre claims to have been exposed to, CooperPoint denied his workman’s compensation claim because Aguirre has not proven exposure to elements that may have caused cancer, among other legal obligations.
