Human trafficking: It’s happening in our backyard

The issue of human trafficking in Arizona is just as damaging as fentanyl, but far less talked about, one Valley police chief says.

“The amount of attention that is garnered around the country and the fentanyl pill epidemic is the same amount of attention that should be applied to sex trafficking, labor trafficking and the commercial sex trade — but it’s not,” said Scottsdale Police Chief Jeff Walther during a June 22 press conference.

“That’s where we need you to recognize this is a problem. It’s a significant problem and it ruins lives in the same manner that the fentanyl epidemic does. We just have to bring it out from behind the curtain and recognize this is what is happening all over the state, the city, the Valley and all over the country. We have to come out from the shadows and recognize that without a collaborative effort here, we’re going to fail in this measure.”
