How to bring Dark Sky designation to any Arizona town

Flagstaff set the original standard for cities and towns reducing light pollution. Achieving Dark Sky status can start with just a small group of dedicated residents as one Valley town learned.

Pollution comes in too many forms, but Arizona is one of the world’s leaders in showing how to reduce a major environmental nuisance.

While Earth Day falls on April 22, Earth Night might be more apt when considering important steps to reduce light pollution. Arizona helped pioneer the efforts to curb the unwanted environmental byproduct of communities when in 1958 the city of Flagstaff passed one of the first outdoor lighting ordinances in the U.S., specifically designed to protect astronomical observations.
