How investing in Valley families can help prevent child abuse

OPINION — Each April, communities reflect on how we protect our most vulnerable children. Too often, the conversation centers on intervention after harm has already occurred. But what if the most effective solution is also the most compassionate one, supporting parents, especially mothers, before crises arise?

At Hushabye Nursery, we see every day that when mothers are supported, children are safer, healthier and more likely to thrive.

Supporting mothers and fathers reduces the risk of child abuse and neglect by addressing the underlying conditions that place families at risk, and by strengthening the protective factors that support safe, stable caregiving. This approach shifts the focus from blame to prevention, recognizing that most parents want the best for their children but may face overwhelming barriers that make safe caregiving more difficult.
