A 52-year-old man died at a hospital after he was shot Sunday by police outside his Bell Road apartment, authorities said.

The shooting occurred following hours of negotiations with the armed man at 3202 West Bell Road, Phoenix police said.

Officers arrived at the apartment about 9:45 a.m. Sept. 28 after receiving a call about a man who pointed a gun at himself, and at some point, fired a gun inside his apartment.

Nearby apartments were evacuated, and law enforcement surrounded the man’s apartment. Special Assignments Unit negotiators arrived and took over negotiations with the man, later identified as David Steinbach, for several hours, police said.

The man left his apartment about 3:47 p.m. with a gun in his hand.

“SAU gave commands to the man to drop the gun, but he did not. This is when the officer involved shooting occurred,” a police department release stated.

The man was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division will be investigating the shooting.
