Food drive provides hope for holidays in Sun City West

Event set Dec. 17

Last April a Sun City West couple wanted to help a local food bank and less than one week later a food drive was put together.

Thanks to the support of the Sun City West Community, 3,000 pounds of food was collected and donated as well as $32,000. The drive was held at Desert Palms Presbyterian Church, 13459 W. Stardust Blvd., alongside Theater West and members from the Westernaires, Boomers, Stained Glass and Woodshop clubs, as well as Grandview men’s and women’s golf league, as well as others assisted in the drive.

Steve and Vicki Johnsen reached out to Desert Palms Presbyterian Church officials again this year to host Hope for the Holidays, which is a food drive and cash donation collection to support the Agua Fria and West Valley food banks, as well as the Navajo Nation. Mr. Johnsen said with the COVID-19 case numbers rising and food banks in need, a food drive is one way to help and with Christmas around the corner. People are looking for ways to help.
