Holidays bring concerns for mental health experts

The holidays can be difficult for many people in the Valley, but the uncertainty and isolation brought by the ongoing pandemic has only exacerbated seasonal stress, experts say.

Celebrating the holidays can bring financial stress with additional shopping, concern about certain family members and getting out of a wellworn routine, said Dr. Dona Locke, a neuropsychologist with the Mayo Clinic.

“Even before COVID, it can be a really stressful time for people,” she said. I think one thing that can be really helpful about the holiday stress is really to focus on those things that really are most meaningful for you. I think some of us begin to feel really overwhelmed with all of the commitments we have in that period of time. It’s okay to really focus on those things that really have the most meaning for you and really fill your cup and make those priorities.”
