Historic plaque to be funded by Mesa DAR chapter

Ideas pitched to city’s historic preservation board

Where to place a plaque to commemorate the American Revolutionary War or in honor of the sacrifices made by Mesa residents in other wars was discussed recently by the Mesa Historic Preservation Board, with no decision made.

It could be for July 4, 2026, which marks 250 years of America’s independence; the 50th anniversary in 2023 of the Vietnam War, which ended March 29, 1973; or honoring U.S. military veterans in Mesa City Cemetery, said Rosemary McMasters, regent of the Saguaro Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, to the advisory board Oct. 5.

The all-volunteer group is funding a garden to observe the 100th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where remains were interred Nov. 11, 1921, at Arlington National Cemetery. The DAR chapter opens its memorial garden this Nov. 11 at the community at ViewPoint Golf Resort, 650 N. Hawes Road in Mesa, but could install another one, she said.
