Historic Phoenix church approved for renovations

First Presbyterian Church, built in 1927, is now City of Grace

A nearly century-old Phoenix church is receiving some renovations.

The church — now a City of Grace church but built as First Presbyterian Church in 1927 — was approved for the renovations on Wednesday by Phoenix Historic Preservation Officer Janet Reed.

The building, at 402 W. Monroe St., is both listed on the city of Phoenix’s register of historic properties and the National Register of Historic Places. It is now approved to receive façade modifications, mostly on the southern wall that faces the courtyard, including window-to-door conversions, a door-to-window conversion, installation of shade structure, window replacement, new doors with modification to the transom window above the door, addition of a baptismal/fountain in the courtyard and landscaping changes.
