Hiring at-will employees topic of Apache Junction council executive session

Discussion on hiring department heads as at-will employees is the sole topic of the Apache Junction City Council’s Feb. 1 closed-door executive session.

The City Council is to meet in executive session, which is not open to the public, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Conference Room, 300 E. Superstition Blvd.

The agenda for the meeting states “Discussion and consideration on legal requirements for changing city code provisions to cause future department heads to be hired as at-will employees versus employees with due process rights.”

State law allows the meetings per Arizona Revised Statutes, which states, in part, that upon a public majority vote of the members constituting a quorum, a public body may hold an executive session. It goes on to list seven subsections detailing the types of meetings that may be held, according to azleg.gov.
