Hiking in summer heat can be dangerous

Preparation, timing keys to safe experience

As summertime temperatures approach 110 degrees and beyond, there are plenty of news stories about firefighters rescuing hikers from the numerous hiking locations around the Valley after they fall ill to heat-related conditions.

In many instances these hikers are just not using good sense by hitting the trails in peak heat.

Fountain Hills is becoming known as a destination for hikers, with the Adero Canyon Trailhead providing a primary gateway to miles of trails that cut across the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve and cross over into the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve. During the month of June, just shy of 3,000 hikers passed through the gate at Adero Canyon Trailhead. The counter records both directions.
