The Higley Unified School District Governing Board has agreed to ensure the district’s compliance with key federal civil rights and student privacy laws, a move necessary to maintain eligibility for federal grant funding.
However, the board rejected a separate resolution last week that would have affirmed the district’s commitment to equal educational opportunity and acknowledged federal guidance on civil rights from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.
The board authorized on April 22 the superintendent or designee to sign the certifications and assurances required by the federal government under an executive order from President Trump. This includes formal agreement to comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment.
