OPINION — Whatever criticisms one may level at Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, insufficient loyalty to the president cannot be among them. One would, in fact, be hard-pressed to discover within the historical records of the republic a Cabinet member more hermetically aligned with his commander in chief’s agenda than Hegseth.
It is unsurprising that this pertains not only to matters of defense policy and military readiness, but also to the derivative concerns as well — for example, clearing out the “woke” ideological plaque that has built up within the federal bureaucracy (not excluding the armed services) or his vocal support for the president’s efforts to curb the administrative state’s rapacious appetite.
What is perplexing is that Hegseth would allow a moment of zeal to undercut two of President Trump’s signature policies.
